Prior to your hospital admission or before a number of outpatient operations, many surgeons will prescribe standard lab testing. The tests aid in identifying potential issues that, if not identified and addressed right away, could complicate surgery. Before surgery, the following tests are frequently performed:

A chest X-ray

X-rays can help diagnose causes of shortness of breath, chest pain, cough, and certain fevers. They can also help diagnose abnormal heart, breathing, and lung sounds.

Electrocardiogram (ECG)

Heart electrical activity is monitored during this test. It detects abnormal heart rhythms (arrhythmias or dysrhythmias), detects heart muscle damage, and aids in the diagnosis of chest pain, palpitations, and heart murmurs.

Urinalysis

This test can assist in the diagnosis of kidney and bladder infections, as well as diabetes. Certain types of urinalysis can detect the presence of illegal drugs in the body.

White blood cell count

Some fevers and infections may be diagnosed with the aid of this test. It can also identify if a person is taking medications that affect white blood cell counts.

Before surgery, you may also require one or more of the following blood tests:

Glucose

Your blood sugar levels are determined by this test.

Potassium

This test determines the levels of potassium, sodium, and other electrolytes in your blood. These chemicals aid in the regulation of heart rhythms and other bodily functions.

Complete blood count (CBC)

Anemic (low red blood cell count) and infection are both tested for with this procedure.

Coagulation tests (PT/PTT)

Such examinations determine how well your blood clots are.
